Relationship building with key leaders is crucial step in becoming a trusted advisor. In order to do so you have to think about playing the long game. This includes being productive, consistent, demonstrating expertise and leadership, while simultaneously being an active listener. You must also understand your place in the relationship, that you are a trusted advisor, and at the end of the day leader’s decision is what must be executed. You can demonstrate additional value by offering strategic recommendations and honest counsel, in addition to excellent execution.

As a young person who’s successfully built strong relationships with leaders, I’d say contribution is key. It’s not just about being present or visible, it’s about adding value, and one of the ways you can do this is by catching low-hanging fruits. Think: what are the minor problems the company or leadership is facing, and how can I solve them? This can be as simple as creating a slack integration that updates everyone, or even sharing possible solutions during brainstorm sessions. Everyone wants to associate with productive people, leaders too. So add value by contributing and working on low-hanging fruits!

In my experience, senior leaders don't always understand the variety of responsibilities communications managers can have. Meet one-on-one when you can to build a personal connection, and ask about the communications challenges they face in their role that you can help alleviate. Highlight your skills instead of just your job description, and look out for opportunities in the future to invite them into your work (e.g. ask for good news from their department to share on social media or offer to draft a company-wide announcement for an initiative they are spearheading). Don't just tell them your value - show them!

In my experience, all anyone wants to know is where they stand - if something isn’t possible or can’t be done in the timeframe available, it’s best to be upfront about that from the outset and offer alternative solutions. Equally it’s important to understand the rationale for any requests coming from executive leadership i.e. what decision will this impact, as there might be information already available that’s sufficient without creating extra work.
