From personal experience, I have learned so much since began networking online with people in my area of practice, attending professional events, connecting with industry colleagues, and finding my voice in my community through networking and the validation that comes with belonging to a community of practice. I have been able to tap into new sources of inspiration, challenge myself, gain invaluable insight into various industries, and explore cutting-edge trends.

Local GIS user groups are amazing opportunities to expand one's network. I've found immense value in attending several of these at the county, state, and regional levels. I will say to maximize your time at the user group meetups is to ask to present on a project you've worked on to contribute or to bring a point of discussion to a user collaboration session. The more you involve yourself in the community the more impact you will have on building a strong network.
