What are the best ways to build relationships with people who have different skill sets?

Having different skill sets is one of the many attributes of one's presence. As a people's manager, it is crucial to understand the driving force of an individual who have multiple skill sets and why does s(he) holds these? Also, how deep their knowledge is in these skills. Thus, to find the answers of these questions, deep communication starting with casual talk is very effective. Communicating and listening to them following the friendly relation will build a strong relation, will help to unveil the the personality. Understanding the need and the driver will enable a leader to channelize these skills in the suitable situation which will be beneficial both way.

Be curious. Each person is different and brings different perspective, view, skillset. Start with asking open questions about that person's background, what they enjoy, how they like to cooperate. Look for similarities, that always help in relationship building. Focus on skills that are different and may enrich your project / organization and appreciate them.

I find that what works most of the time is to get to know them, learn their experience, skills, strengths, weaknesses, personality......and become the most valuable resource they need and that benefits their performance, which also benefits the company and the customer too.

Building relationships with people who have different skill sets requires active listening, participation in activities together, showing interest in their expertise, collaboration on projects, sharing your expertise, and recognizing and appreciating differences. When people with different skill sets come together to build relationships, they can learn from each other and create more innovative solutions. It can bring a wide variety of perspectives and expertise to a team, leading to more innovative and effective results

Making continuous dialogue happen is also an effective way of building relationship. Connecting the previous situation or experience related their skill sets, make the opposite person more comfortable. Sharing the values, which I hold and how these has been helpful to grow in my life can help to connect better with the opposite person.

Learning is never ending, if we surrender ourselves to the person who has more knowledge and understanding in some area: creates a demand and supply equation. Once we show our interest and willingness, with gratitude, to learn from others; they will be happy to help and will make the relation more transparent and effective.

We are wired to appreciate being appreciated, and we find value in being in environments where we are valued. One of the most productive ways to build upon a new relationship with a peer with differing skill sets is to place yourself in a position to learn from them. True peer-to-peer instruction tends to become a two-way street where learning is more mutual and cooperative than transactional and singularly focused. Other outcomes that follow peer-to-peer instruction are trust, relational equity, and cooperative problem-solving.

"Your network is your networth" Connecting the network internally and externally is a master tool to expand our network and strength our bonds with the existing network. Finding the need of other and matching them with your existing network is as joyous as solving a puzzle. Giving referral, cold calls etc. are effective is building a mutually beneficial relation.

Masking ourselves does no good. More we try to pretend like them or probably something different, which we are actually not; might give a temporary spike. However, it is absolutely avoidable if we are seeking a transparent and lasting relation. Being open to others, sharing personal life, passions and showing respect to their personal life, being empathetic to their problems etc. is essential to build a sustainable and ever lasting strong relation.

Relationships and community are the fuel that keeps us going. It is always in our best interest to nurture and maintain relationships that have proven to be fruitful and cooperative. As lifelong learners we are always growing, developing, and expanding our skill sets; the same truth applies to the burgeoning relationships that you intend to invest in. As you effort to stay connected to one another, you will both be sure to benefit relationally and professionally.
