What are the best ways to build authentic relationships with your colleagues?

The best advice I was ever given about building relationships was to focus on being interested rather than interesting It's so easy to fall into the trap of trying to impress people. But slowing down and being interested in others rather than trying to wow them makes for a much better foundation to find a connection

Being curious and open-minded extends past someone's personal life. Be open to different opinions and perspectives ... insights can come from the outside ... being open to that diversity of thought can uncover opportunities that would have been missed.

Approach your clients with the curiosity of a child. Open-ended questions with no yes or no answers can help you do this. Let them talk more. And while you are listening to them, celebrate the successes and make them clearly aware of it. A mutual rapport speeds up the process.

in today's remote work world, it's also important to consider time zones and hours meetings are scheduled ... that can happen without restricting where people are located. the stereotypes and biases extend beyond a cultural background. focus on skills, experience, and how well they'd fit into the corporate culture or team dynamic more than what timezone (or country) they're in ... and if you need to work primarily in 1 language (like English) don't exclude a prospect based on where they live ... there are people born in English-speaking countries with poor English skills, non-native English speakers with excellent speaking and written skills ... and everything in between

Shared experiences are key to building strong relationships, both in and out of the workplace. Genuine experiences are more effective than forced team-building activities, which can sometimes feel contrived. When people naturally share emotional experiences, like employees in the bicycle industry going on bike rides together, they form deeper bonds. These rides offer scenery, exercise, teamwork, and idea exchange, fostering trust, genuine concern, and synergy back in the workplace. Letting go of our masks and being real is important. Being us who we are and not trying to fit in is a key. When colleagues as humans let go of the competitiveness and rat race herd mentality, true camaraderie can be cultivated.

Colleagues in my opinion cannot be choosen in majority of the cases. If we want to have an authentic relationship then - be yourself, - accepting the person for being themselves.

In business word, we have masks. We wear these masks in every environment we enter to protect us in a way. The urge to continue existing and fears make us become someone we are not. The moment we let go of the masks will be the moment we will start building authentic relationships.
