Offshore wind requires a different mindset on top of the core qualifications acquired during the formal training. That knowledge is very important and cannot be acquired without inevitably making a lot of big or small mistakes. Mistakes - big or small, in offshore wind can be hugely expensive.

My advice, for what it’s worth, is to learn the different value chains, the different pieces of each value chain, and what matters to each piece of the value chain. From production, to distribution, to dispensing, and end user. Each piece of the value chain has different players, challenges, and KPIs. So, after understanding the technology, gaining an understanding of the value chain is helpful in learning the renewable market (or any market to be honest).

As someone who is just getting started in learning about renewable energy, I recommend dissecting the different types of renewable energies into sections. Start with the most mature in your region and work towards the least mature. This will help you identify why not all renewables are created equally. A series of steps will need to follow that will allow you to dig deeper into technology and commercial applications.

In my experience, the best way you can become an expert is through developing passion for the subject matter. We learn more about what we care about. My passion for the renewable space led to intensive research and exploration of things I knew and didn’t know about, to further understand the industry. I also aligned myself with other industry experts to bring their strengths into the equation to complement what I had to offer. Changing the world isn’t a job for 1 person, but it takes a team. You dont have to know it all, but be able to provide the insights to the larger collective for the growth of the future of the industry.

You also should use from reliable sources. Furthermore, asking from experts would definatly boost you up and keeping that in mind learning takes time as well. So do not rush or push yourself too hard, enjoy the road as much as the results.

It’s important to keep yourself informed and updated with market trends, policies, internal and external enablers and constraints, research articles, reports etc. through both online as well as offline forums. An analytical approach to make use of available information into meaningful resultants for your business challenges will help you in developing expertise.

There's a lot that could be gained from mentorship, school and training but what's helped me grow most is executing on projects and learning from my own mistakes. Engineers spend a lot of time at a desk working on designs and in the code book but there's no substitute for getting on site and seeing how these systems come together. I've learned more chopping it up with an electrician for a few hours than I have from many of my bosses or school. You cannot put out buildable designs without gaining that builder's perspective. To me the perfect weekly schedule for a project engineer is 4 days in the office 1 day on site. Get the feedback loop of what is working in the field and what isn't and modify the next design accordingly.
