To answer questions about your long term career goals needs great clarity first about what those goals are. In this fast evolving dynamic VUCA world, long term career goals may sometimes best be North Star directional ideas. I always advise professionals to do the personal visioning exercise to visualise their long term goals. The next step is to articulate them to potential employers. This will help employers in understanding organisational alignment and fitment. Institutional and individual growth is only possible when there is commonality of purpose, vision and direction.

Keep it real. Give an honest answer. If the company isn't up for what you're striving to do, you're not going to be happy working there, and what's the point of that?

Identifying and listing a clear long term goal and keeping aligned to it in any work environment can be a challenging situation for many. But I think it is still an exercise that's worth the effort. Every person is unique in some way and has his/her strengths. And the long term goals, will unknowingly be driven by these interests/strengths. While the job at hand may not always present the best opportunity to bring them out, being aware of your strengths and the long term goal, can open up possibilities and help define short term stretch goals even in the current role/environment. And slowly but steadily, this can steer the career towards your long term goal.

Whose lives will you have improved? As a recruiter, I've interviewed about 3000 job candidates. The folks I remember are those who get specific and show passion.

Focus on what excites you, energizes you and why. This will help you identify your skillset and aspirations which will then inform your long term career goals. A common pitfall to avoid is not go after a specific title(s). Think about what the role entails and how it aligns to your values and passion.

First, understand what it is they are asking. The interviewer is trying to discern whether your professional goals align with the job at hand. They want to see if there is a mutual fit between what you hope to achieve and what the company can offer you. When formulating your response to this question, think about the role before you. What does a natural career progression look like for someone who formerly worked in this position? Where do you think they are now, and what skills would they have learned along the way? If you are great at communicating and collaboration then may be building large teams is where your niche is. if you like solving complex problems then technical leadership in architecture space is you need to be focusing on.

Obviously recruiters need you to demonstrate you can technically do the job you’re going for, but if you’ve got an interview, then that's probably a given. What they look for in the conversation is more aligned to your potential fit with the organisation e.g, your ability to lead, manage, innovate, transform etc and a sense of what makes you tick. So, I advise interviewees to think about their work goals, career aspirations and how the organisation aligns with those. I also suggest they consider their values and how important these might be to the organisation e.g., authenticity, entrepreneurialism, agility, creativity, teamwork, inclusivity, customer focus etc. When there’s a value gap, often a performance or engagement crack follows!

Talk specifically about the outcomes you have achieved that link to your career purpose. Express examples of what is fundamentally important for you to achieve and what you have done to achieve this. Be specific about people you’ve made an impact on, rise in performance KPIs that have been achieved. Be clear that the application of your career intention is for you to actually deliver meaningful outcomes, so be pragmatic about explaining these.

There is no "one" good career goal or one type of good goal. There is only "your" career goal. it can be on any dimension like 1. I want to be CXO 2. I want to fly business class 3. I want to solve world hunger 4. I want to get to space where I work only one day a week etc. Important thing is your "authentic story" of why you have this goal. 1. You want to become CXO becuase you saw industry being insensitive community and you want to build socially responsible business.... 2. You want to fly business class as you had deprived childhood that made you less ambitious. you want to taste luxury to achieve impossible goals etc. You get the drift...... In the end ask them the path to achieve it. so that they are invested in it.

To structure effectively, outline your content, decide on a chronological or thematic arrangement, introduce and conclude clearly, use descriptive headings, include smooth transitions, balance detail and conciseness, and regularly review and revise for clarity.

Similar to Corporates Vision and Mission, every career oriented person should have a Long Term Goals and have plans to reach the goal. Long term goals help you arrive at short term goals/plans. It will allow the executive to have a clear thought process, action and results. People with long term goals are easily visible as they stand out in their fields.

It is always advisable to collect and collate information, think through and do a thorough homework about the company’s current performance and long term objectives. Then the next step is to carefully matching and aligning one’s core competence and strengths with the company’s long term vision. One’s pitch about his / her own core competence and strengths should be fully aligned with company’s vision. It should clearly state how the competency of that person will help the company to achieve its goals, vision and mission in the short, medium and long terms respectively.

My PRO TIP is this - if the interviewer or plural stop writing, then stop talking. You’ve stopped saying anything relevant or interesting and this means there’s no point writing down anything you’re saying. If someone is madly scribbling notes and trying to keep up with your response, keep going, you are definitely on the right track ??

This is critical, so I encourage clients to think about 3 things: the warm-up (what you do ahead of an interview), the stand-up (the interview itself) and the follow-up (how you respond after the meeting). Lately I’ve seen ‘no thanks’ become an offer because of the way an interviewee reacted to disappointment. They were positive, respectful, and asked for a brief follow up chat and a few pointers. Two other finalists reacted negatively towards their rejection, so a few weeks later when the person who won the role quit my client was immediately offered the role. Of course, their skills hadn’t improved overnight but their positive attitude and resilience was noticed & valued by the recruiter.

No matter where you are in your career, you have to keep your skills relevant, understand how technology aids business outcomes, but most importantly really know how to work and relate with lots of different people. The more adept you are in building relationships, solving complex problems, and being able to explain them simply, the better your long term career will be. Instead of long term career goals, ask questions about what areas are you interested in growing? What excites you about the role we are discussing, how do you see yourself adding value?

I strongly believe in identifying one’s long term career objectives and level of attainment that one would like to achieve. Then carefully crafting the milestones, preferably with a flexible timeline / plan. One’s that is done 75% of job is done. As a word of caution I would like to request you to invest more time and put forward deep thought during this process, since a big part of future success depends on this. Then one has to continually follow the plan and evaluate actual achievements with attainment of milestones to be on the right track. One need to be little flexible and continuously adjust and revise the plan with actual achievements to reach the final destination or level of attainment.
