During my time in the industry, I like to think of text summarization as taking a long story and pulling out the most important parts. The difficult part is making sure that the original text's meaning isn't lost. While extractive techniques, such as TextRank, are excellent for identifying important sentences, abstractive techniques, which produce new sentences as a summary, are becoming more and more popular. For abstractive summarization, using transformer-based models like T5 or BERT can produce impressive results, but it's also important to constantly compare the summaries to those written by humans to ensure quality.
