What are the best ways to advance your user research career?

Your portfolio is an extension of yourself. Choosing to work on projects highlights the direction you've taken in your career and also the work that you've put in to hone and showcase your skills. I've added projects to my portfolio which highlights my approach, methods used and insights gathered. Potential employers, clients and collaborators will get a sneak peak into my thought process through the portfolio. Be smart about the projects you choose and the way you showcase it.

Personal branding is very underrated. Almost all of my jobs I have landed is through my personal branding which is my portfolio too. Portfolio is a tangible representation of the skills which shows unique approach to user research and how one can stand apart from other candidates. A suggestion would be to show it as a reflecting personal growth on how you have navigated previous roles, growth, evolution of skills, methodologies and challenges. Make sure to share your passion and interest.

The product you create is the result of your thoughts and ideas. But it is very important that you have correctly identified the need and the problem and first be sure about it and the value that you can create with the product. You should discuss the need and value of the product with others. It is wrong to think that your product will be accepted. In this conversation, you should not insist on your product and idea, but you should allow them to easily criticize your idea. Use hearsay and reviews to be sure.

User research is a continuous and dynamic process. I see it as an integration of primary and secondary research. Primary research is best done through user interviews. Going in the field and asking the potential users is an authentic approach. Conducting surveys is another way. Tools such as Metabase, dovetail, intercom can help you collect primary research data and help you analyse to draw valuable insights. There are multiple tools to conduct secondary research - through statista, Euromonitor passport, etc.

Like every space in this era, continuous learning is crucial for your long-term success. Every industry needs user research so you should find a space your passionate about, Software, Hardware, Retail, etc and then dive deep into that realm. Learn everything you can about that space from both a qualitative or quantitative viewpoint. You can dive deeper and go down a rabbit hole and make yourself an expert. ie. Software --> Fintech. Go down the FinTech rabbit hole and start talking to founders, builder, investors, etc. and build a portfolio along the way that showcases you know your stuff. Any career aspirant, that specializes in a vertical will have their career light up in front of them.

Stay current with the latest user research methods and tools. Take courses, attend workshops, and get certifications in UX research. Familiarize yourself with both qualitative and quantitative research tools and techniques to broaden your skill set.

Continuously explore and learn about emerging research techniques, software, and technologies. Pick up to 20 of the best user researchers in your field and use the sales approach of emailing/messaging up to 6 times. Networking, just like many things in life is a numbers game. Not everyone will get back to you so don't be too disheartened.

Collaborate with other UX researchers to enhance your ux network and this will help you in getting more ideas what other people are doing in the industry. Seek individuals that have experiences you are looking for. ... Don't be afraid to reach out with a well-crafted message. ... Come with a list of questions or with a goal in mind. ... DO NOT ask the person for a job. ... Afterward, thank them for their time and try to keep them updated.

In Freelancing and Start up market research, you need to always pay attention to your market, to track market shift, cultural changes, new technology emergences (for Microsoft Azure, with Azure Fabric). Interviewing Product Managers and Product Lead often on a weekly basis within a User Research enables you to strengthen your User Research skills, but also your Market awareness.
