The best way to start a writing career without zero experience is WRITING. Eventually, you'll be able to pitch a niche you enjoy writing about after you've honed your writing skills. With that being said, "practice makes progress". Here are some topics I used to get started: ~Mental Health ~ Nursing ~Relationships ~Food ~Personal development I hope this helps someone ready to take the following steps in their writing career!

Identifying a niche can happen only much much later in years, once you have really gotten started (worked and got your first payments), tested the waters (understood the industry landscape), gotten your hands really dirty! (Here, meaning write, write and write…), understanding your own personality and writing preferences, and balancing your financial and career goals. To get started, take projects that you might be familiar with, focus more on variety of documents and clients (monetary negotiations can be secondary), get as much hands on as you can…and don’t forget to continue building your portfolio and network on the go! Good work surely pays off..specially for repeat businesses at the start and up scaling later!

When I was a cub and couldn't offer much depth to my writing even with best effort, I pinned up a line by Henry David Thoreau to my first work desk that I was not to forget throughout life: 'How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.' Let life flow, and the writing will follow.

Everyone has to start somewhere, but it's a catch 22. You need a portfolio or samples, but that's hard to get without experience. I strongly disagree with finding a niche first. That takes time and experience. I recommend going broad - take internships, write for friends/family, create your own spin on other campaigns/products that inspire you, and take entry-level jobs in marketing, communications, and/or PR, where writing is involved. This gives you an opportunity to get your feet wet with a variety of topics and styles, hone your skills, and build a portfolio. It takes time and practice, so manage your expectations and keep an open mind. You can get more specialized over time.

LinkedIn is a great platforms and offers multiple ways of exhibiting your work and building a real-time portfolio!

Write, write, and write some more. With writing, like many other crafts, the continuous motions of doing it make you better. But unlike some other crafts, it offers a universe to explore; styles, tones, voices, you name it, the world (or page) is your playground. Once you've gained some confidence and feel your writing has reached a certain level, start sharing it with the world. Keep your best pieces on hand, ready to go, and always update your portfolio.
