What is the best way to set your speaking fee for a motivational event?

Start at $5K plus travel or $5K plus $1,250 flat travel (you pay air, ground, meals, and incidentals) plus hotel room. $5K is a price point in the speaking business, any less than that and a meeting planner may think it's not your full time job, it's just a hobby. Or, if you have more than one thing to offer, give them a price for your all inclusive package plus travel. My keynote is $7,500, but I offer it as part of a $12,500 all inclusive package, which includes a keynote, a workshop, and 45 minutes of corporate clean comedy at their banquet.

It can be a little uncomfortable to put a number out there for an event, but the fee is not for the time on stage -- it's for your years of expertise, ability to synthesize into something relevant to the audience, and your skill in delivering it in an engaging and transformative way.

Understand your market. Not every market pays the same. Network and build relationships with speakers you feel you can trust and discuss fees and clients. Create a fee schedule to share with interested prospects. I found this makes the fee discussion more consistent and comfortable.

I've been a professional speaker for more than 30 years. The way we have always set our fees is to carefully research other speakers at my level. Early in my career we would put my price at about 85% of the general market. That way I was not leaving too much money on the table, but I would still be seen as a slightly lower price. Today, I know who my peer group is and what they charge, and I am at the same rate, or little higher than them.

Speakers bureaus sometimes will push out the higher price speakers because their commission is higher which makes a lot of business sense.

Showcase your session as a "value for money" proposition that is compelling enough to gauge its worth. You need to do this parallely with other homework n research before quoting a price. A good way to do this is give a 60 to 120 seconds talk on the subject, anecdotes, sharing just a tip of the ice berge of your message and leaving few thoughtful questions to ponder.

As speakers, there's a great balance between worth and value. Know your value, but understand what you're worth to them. Doing your research will best assist with that. The value of your talk is only as good as how much it's worth to your customers. Immediately, if you under price yourself, the value of what you have to give plummets. If you overprice yourself, your value is not worth it to your customer. Understand what the market is asking for, know your value and it will be worth it for your customer to pay.

So, what I did, was I spoke for free as often as I could because I was not in demand at all and I wasn’t as good as I thought I was, then as people invited me to speak instead of letting me speak, I set a fee, when people accepted that, I raised my rates, until people struggled. I would also check the details of that event, the company size etc. If its a startup trying to scale up, I would keep my fees very affordable and reasonable to help contribute to their growth story. If its a school/college where students want to learn some insights about their future, I would go complimentary. If its a large conglomerate with good budgets, I would charge my standard fee without negotiations.
