It is not enough to study crisis and hundreds of strategies about it (in theory) and when crisis happens we only see a single press release!! And no spokespeople!! Internal and external communications scenarios (as exactly as live crisis) are very important to learn. Presentations, decks, and PPTs with beautiful colors are bluffing!

The deep analysis of the crisis will decide the priority level. It could be an “issue” not crisis! So the assessment is a correct answer here.

There is a known "penguin method" - the same word can mean many different things to different people based on their experiences and culture. Being succinct and using the most common vocabulary is highly important to drive the team fast out of the crisis. Write a short playbook doc just to make sure there's a written version. Make sure people know what they are responsible for, the exact timeline and what is the expected result. The written playbook will be very helpful after the resolution as well. The most important thing during a crisis which is forgotten naturally is a timely recognition and anything else to keep the spirit and motivation up - mainly via timely communication. I have found in a number of simulations, that they have resulted in internal changes that could in fact mitigate or reduce the probability of an actual issue. Prevention also comes from a post crisis resilience plan, where the team unpacks and learns from what happens, rebuilds reputational equity around the eroding issue, and improve resilience for the future. While prevention is ideal, mitigation is the reality. Finally, part of good planning is to embed crisis communication into the way we do business, so that reputational risk is front and centre of business decisions.

Conducting thorough risk analysis and risk preparedness can help crisis planning, a great deal. What also works is having a bank of all historic crisis situations and the possible/ potential situations. This should be extensive with details like, - cause and effect analysis - impact on all fronts - core crisis team for future incidents - honest identification of what succeeded and failed Having such a bank gets the team better prepared for future crisis situations.

Have a crisis management framework. After resolving crises, conduct thorough reviews to identify lessons learned and improve future crisis management processes.

Make sure to divide your team into the crisis group and into the business as usual group. Someone has to keep the business up and running while others are managing the crisis. Again, resources and allocation are essential. Stay focused, clear your calendar. The clock is ticking - don’t underestimate the importance of responsiveness and what its neglect can do to your image.

Crisis may lead to crises if tackled with a communication culture of “event management” ! Bureaucratic communications won’t be able to counter any crisis!

Take turns. Let not the same set of people do the crisis management always. Though R&R ends the cycle, rest and rejuvenation period may call for extension each time, when managing multiple crisis alone becomes the primary responsibility. Handling it well and winning over is an experience and achievement in itself. No doubt, It keeps the adrenaline high, but taking a backstep is wise, when another is ready to do it this time. Ive come across a colleague who needed settling time even after the R&R as it was not easy to be posted in a war zone or calamity stricken atmosphere and just hit the normalcy button immediately after.

Collaboration, coordination, and knowing your resources are huge. Also consider who is best to play those roles and who may know those things best. People have different skills and empowering the ones who are good at the different pieces to take those seats, can make all the difference in managing many crises at once. For example, someone on your team may be really amazing at implementing and managing the paperwork processes, someone may be best at communicating with a particular divison or level, and some people may be incredible at empathy or emotionally intelligent and can play the role of mediations. Each people can create a whole team and steam engine that sets your crisis management apart. Know who is best where and leverage them.
