Application Load Balancers (ALBs): - If your application relies heavily on HTTP/HTTPS traffic and you need advanced routing features, an Application Load Balancer (ALB) could be a good fit. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs): - If your goal is to accelerate content delivery and reduce latency for users worldwide, integrating a CDN might be advantageous. They are an excellent choice for serving static content.

In my experience, one of the strategies to do load balancing is to conduct an assessment of the application first. What does the peak load look like? Normal load? and finally the load during non-business hours. The answer to these questions will dictate the redundancy needed for the system. In cloud (AWS), Auto scaling groups could be used for load balancing to keep costs optimal. Using the above analysis, set the Minimum required nodes to say N. Set MAX = N + (nodes needed to serve requests during peak time)., say N + 8. Then set the nominal operational count to something like N +5, which is in-between the min and max. Use CloudWatch to do monitoring for few days and adjust the numbers based on the CloudWatch results.

One way to consider the best type of load balancing for your use case is by understanding the type of work being done by the server. For example, if your server workload is very memory intensive then 'least connections' would likely land your request on a server that has more memory available because it is servicing the fewest clients. If you want to make sure you land on a specific server on each request from the same client, maybe because it has an in-memory DB for example, you'd likely go with a hash-based approach to maximize existing state.

One thing I have found useful in using combination of load balancing techniques . It helped us to achieve an even distribution of traffic across our servers, considering their varying capacities . Round robin ensured fairness , while weighted load balancing allowed us to allocate more requests to servers with higher capabilities. This is not only optimized resource utilization but also enhances the overall performance and reliability of our application.

Using a load balancer that assesses server health and directs traffic to the most available and responsive server. Cloud providers often offer load-balancing services, such as Amazon ELB, Google Cloud Load Balancing. These tools use algorithms to efficiently distribute traffic, enhancing system performance and reliability. Configuring auto-scaling groups, where the number of instances dynamically adjusts based on demand, further enhances scalability. Combining load balancing with other cloud-native practices like container orchestration and CDNs ensures a robust, scalable and responsive cloud infrastructure. Regular monitoring and adjusting of load balancing settings are essential to optimize performance and accommodate evolving workloads.

A proficient load balancer comprises three vital components: the "listener" for incoming requests, a "target group" of servers, and a "rule" defining how requests are routed based on criteria like path or header. This trio orchestrates effective load distribution, ensuring optimal performance in handling diverse requests.

The most important thing you need to consider is the location of your users, prioritizing the most frequent ones. Usually you would need to locate both the target group and the load balancer near them. A good way to think about it is the following: - For each region where users are actively accessing the target group you are going to need a cluster of a load balancer and a target group - If more users from the same region incorporate the cluster, then you split it, distributing the load between 2 load balancers and 2 target groups, and so on Always be aware of the specific numbers, it can mean the difference between a $1000 of a $10000 bill

Don't try to reinvent the wheel, significant resources have already been spent designing and developing load balancer solutions. Depending on the bottlenecks specific to your application and hosting environment you can work with developers familiar with the various approaches and select a solution that works best.

The hybrid approach is the least popular because it comes with the tradeoff of maintaining the non-cloud infrastructure, Although for extreme cases where High Availability needs to be very close to 100%, one way to remove cloud lock-in is to have a dedicated load-balancing that routes traffic to different providers both cloud and on-premise infrastructure

Last thing you want is your infrastructure engineer to leave the company and no one understands how he or she configured your load balancer. - Do you want a cloud native solution (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.)? You may wish to consider an external vendor solution if you ever plan to be multi-cloud. - What are your uptime requirements? Do you need HA deployments of the load balancers? Do you need autoscaling of servers/services? Are you considering multi-region? What happens when one region goes down? Are you considering multi-cloud? What happens when one cloud goes down? Do you need internal (intra-VPC) load balancing solutions? Are all of your services compliant with your reqs.?

A hybrid approach combines both options, balancing performance and cost trade-offs.

If an application is already hosted on a cloud provider's platform it's usually best to utilize the load balancers they already provide rather than trying to roll out a custom solution. If the servers are self-hosted on physical machines or VPS's (virtual private servers) then setting up a self-managed cluster of Kubernetes pods may be best. Even when self-hosting, don't try to reinvent the wheel - look at existing solutions, and if possible look at deployments others have already done in the datacenter your servers are hosted in.

In my opinion, the most effective approach is a role-based strategy. Nowadays, everyone utilizes a cloud vendor such as Amazon Web Services. Specific resources, like static files and archives, need to be hosted on a cloud vendor's servers. Meanwhile, other resources could be allocated to dedicated servers, resulting in a hybrid system. Speaking of dedicated servers, the role-based approach proves to be the most effective also. Each dedicated server would have its own distinct role.

One of the biggest problems I've seen with load balancers... Session state is managed on destination servers, but the load balancer is not configured for sticky sessions. Keeping session state on the server requires that the load balancer direct traffic for the duration of each client session. This can also be problematic, because it reduces HA and becomes a potential performance bottleneck. Many times it's best to offload session state to something like a cache server (or load balanced cluster).

Test and benchmark the load balancer's performance, monitor and analyze metrics and logs, ensure redundancy and backup, use automation for management and scaling, and regularly review and update configurations. These practices optimize system performance, troubleshoot issues, and adapt to evolving demands.

Any load balancing implementation in a system must achieve modules designed to take full advantage of this processing distribution. It is crucial to adhere to the best development practices, such as: Low coupling with well-defined responsibilities and appropriate granularity; Proper state management. If possible, use stateless modules! If not, adopt suitable tools for session data sharing; Idempotent operations to ensure that any failures - which will occur - can be addressed with retry mechanisms. This approach ensures that the load - regardless of the balancing mechanism implemented - can be managed by resilient and scalable processes.

Load balancing also keeps checking the health of server nodes. If any of the server health is down, it prevents the new request from being sent to those servers. LB can also be used for A/B testing. Landing zones can be created on the top of LB. So it does have many purposes depending on how you are utilising it. In earlier days, we were having web farms and web gardens setup with load balancers. But the young cloud generation wouldn't ever see such beautiful things.

Do not make false assumptions concerning application connections, or network reliability, and strive to have a good failover mechanism.
