What is the best way to identify candidates who share your company's values?

Every organization has a specific set of cultural values that are pre-defined globally. ? Try to assess the candidate in interviews which cuts across those cultural aspects. ? Use situational based interviewing model, where we can find out the best of the best of the candidates. ? Involve tenured leadership team members / Senior HRBPs in the assessments, to evaluate cultural fit.

As a recruiter from an agency, our role is to find the best talents for our clients (companies) and act as career matchmakers. In the candidates' screening process, other than the technical skills, I like to ask more "personal" questions, related to their experiences in the work environment. Career progression (where do they see themselves in 3-5 years, long-term), job choices and preferences (by providing examples), management style (both ways), biggest achievements, examples of difficulties and challenges and how they overcame them/what they learned, what they or others think of them ("How would your manager describe you by using 3 adjectives?") The key, in my opinion, is to be a good observer and to look for non-verbal communication, body language, attitude, and tone. And, obviously, building a genuine connection with the person behind the CV is of big help.

Someone could be successful working for your competitor and have all the right skills and then they fail because your culture was not a match for them. I like to ask about their motivators (what makes you excited about what you do, what type of team do you thrive with, what type of manager or leader do you enjoy reporting to, and I even ask, what type of environment or manager drains your energy and sucks your soul dry), unless I have a clear understanding of this candidate and what makes them successful, I won’t be able to properly pinpoint if the cultural fit is aligned as well.

An important question for a leader (or leaders) to decide is what tradeoffs if any will be made for a strong culture fit where the skill fit may not be as strong. Don't have a "culture Interview". You should be evaluating culture in every interaction. Have some questions prepared to gauge their alignment, but make sure you know what your values are (and how to spot them) before hiring anyone. PS - it's okay for these values to adjust and grow overtime.
