What is the best way to evaluate your performance in a Startup Development role?

Startups are like speedboats - it's super easy to change direction and go speeding off into the great unknown - sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's bad. The best way to know that you are acheiving your objectives is to keep just two things in mind: 1. No matter your role, how many clients (defined as anyone outside the company) are using what you are doing? The more the better (obviously). 2. Check in with your leadership frequently to ensure that the engagement you are generating is in line with the vision. You can't check in too often.

One of the most important startup objectives is to secure your first, paying customer or client. Focusing on that almost single-mindedly will help focus almost all internal efforts on WHAT needs to be done now that the business is formed.

Vision mission and such are big words that is very hard to translate to ones individual context. As someone working in a startup, all one should look for is to see how their work is contributing to the startups immediate plans. Most often these maybe leading the specific prospects & pilots, on to paying customers. Looking for the directional and field/customer connect and perspective in everything one does in a startup, is the most important while assessing contributions and value created.

Align personal goals with the startup's objectives. Ensure that your efforts contribute directly to the company's growth and success. Assess your ability to adapt to changes and drive innovation. Startup environments often require flexibility and creative problem-solving. Highlight instances where you've introduced innovative solutions.

When seeking feedback, consider carefully the questions you ask. The ones who ask the questions is the one who leads the conversation. Asking irrelevant or self-promoting questions serves to waste critical time. Rather ask for input on securing or growing your initial customer base; evaluate cash burn and even ask about actual cash spending habits. Cash availability and disciplines make for better sleep... I also value asking about risks (that I may still not be aware of) to mitigate.

Feedback Loops: Regularly seek feedback from peers, superiors, and team members. Use this feedback to identify areas of improvement and to celebrate successes.

Again, these are very nice management principles. But need something simple and tangible for individuals assessing their contributions. Best us to ask the founder or your immediate reporting manager for the biz context of the tasks and activities you are engaged in. And then oush further to ask what market results the company is expecting from that work. And this is what you must evaluate your contributions against.

Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to your role. This may include user acquisition, conversion rates, revenue growth, or other measurable outcomes.

Best mentors are the startup founders themselves. The perspective they will have on what the startup is doing and why is extremely important. And seeking some time regularly from them can be extremely valuable to you, and that perspective will also ensure you di things that are valuable to the company.

The OODA loop should be as short as possible during especially this phase: Observe, Orient, Decide and Act. By undergoing frequent self-assessments that lead to actions: now THAT strengthens the prganization When events occur that grabs everyone's immediate and urgent attention, the company becomes stronger with blame free and honest discussions that leads to better systems.
