What is the best way to evaluate the effectiveness of an interaction design?

First up, we prioritize defining clear evaluation goals. Whether it's improving user satisfaction, task efficiency, or error rates, setting specific goals helps us measure success accurately. Clarity here guides our entire evaluation process.

Want to know if an interaction design is good? The best way is to ask the users. That's it. Watch them USE the design to see if it's easy for them. Use surveys and interviews to find out if they're happy and if there are any problems. Look at numbers like how many tasks they finish and how often they make mistakes. Also, check if people keep using the design over time. By regularly asking users and looking at these things, you can make the design better and more effective.

Cognitive Walkthroughs : Conduct cognitive walkthroughs with usability experts or stakeholders who simulate user interactions. This helps identify potential usability issues based on the mental model of users and their expectations at different stages of the interaction. This includes defining user personas, step-by-step simulations, and focusing on the user's perspective. Evaluators identify potential usability issues and provide insights for iterative design improvements.

When it comes to choosing evaluation methods, we're all about variety. Usability testing gives us real user insights, A/B testing helps gauge design variations, and heuristic evaluations bring in expert perspectives. The mix of quantitative and qualitative data ensures a comprehensive view of our interaction design's impact. It's like having a diverse set of lenses to view our work from every angle!

First, identify what you want to measure & then look at revaluation methods. eg. 1. Usability testing is one such method, which involves testing your design with real or potential users & observing them. 2. User feedback is another method, that involves gathering user opinions, feedback & suggestions. 3. Analytics is a 3rd method that measures by analyzing user performance using quantitative data like page views, clicks, conversions, retention etc. 4. Additionally, heuristic evaluation is a method used to evaluate your design against set principles or guidelines like Nielsen's 10 usability heuristics or the ISO 9241-210 standard.

It's important as a designer to have a solid grasp of the repertoire of qualitative and quantitative tools available to us. However, for newer designers especially, one critical point I don't see being spoken about enough are the different types of evaluation and analytic tools used. Most newer designers know what Figma is, or how to hold a conference meeting. However, a lot of them don't have familiarity with enterprise tools like HotJar or UserTesting. In order for us to create a stronger impact and growth for future designers, we need to promote more visibility and usage of the breadth of tools used in the evaluation process.

Being mindful of time is crucial in evaluating interaction design. It ensures a thorough and efficient process, allowing adequate time for conducting detailed evaluations and analyzing results without rushing, which might compromise the quality of insights. Timely analysis is essential to quickly implement feedback, keeping the design process agile and responsive to user needs. Moreover, well-planned timelines respect the time commitments of participants and team members, fostering better engagement and collaboration. I personally bring this up because it's very much an area where I sometimes catch myself slipping!

Measuring backwards movement on a user journey is a great way to gauge if you have appropriately anticipated user actions during the user journey mapping, or if users aren't finding something they expected during the user journey (meaning a need for better guidance earlier in the user journey)
