Designing for recyclability or reuse is the ideal for our future. Does your packaging easily separate into its mono material parts for recycling? For example, if you can avoid gluing a cushioning material to the corrugated that will help a lot. or use corrugated as your cushioning so it can all be recycled together!

From my discussions with recycling companies, a top concern is cleanliness of the recyclables collected for processing. We all have a responsibility to "recycle right" to keep contamination out of the recycling and composting bins. The downstream effects of incorrect sorting can cause huge bottlenecks for recyclers. Here are some benefits to processors when customers provide clean recyclables: 1. Less expense and logistics around dealing with cross-contamination 2. Higher price per ton on the commodities market for stronger profit margins 3. Quality feedstock for use in the manufacturing of new items through recycled materials. From the office to our homes, we can all do our part in boosting recycling markets, which create green jobs!

This requires marketers to understand the impact of their design choices, not just the sales velocity of the product. A helpful exercise is to design from back to front, i.e., take a product that is desirable and valuable to the recycler, and work backwards to the original design to see where you end up.

2 Design for disassembly and recycling

This issue tends to be one of the more significant issues regarding building materials and their recycling ability. This ability is limited due to construction materials/products' inability to be separated into their individual parts for separate recycling. Additionally, many of the parts that are disassembled could still have current use life. So this would allow the materials to be upcycled and used again instead of using energy to recycle them thus also reducing their carbon footprint.

Another key factor for developing sustainable end-of-life management practices is to communicate effectively with recyclers and other stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, regulators, and NGOs. You should establish a dialogue with recyclers and understand their needs, expectations, and feedback on your product design and recycling potential.
