Every mentoring relationship is unique; some continue for years, while others just last for a single coffee date or meeting. Whether they are in a long or short-term relationship, Mentors need share the the three hallmarks that inspire, motivate, and support their mentees by giving them with the resources they need to achieve their goals and overcome difficulties.

The strength of a mentor can be determined by their relatability and how much an individual believes that they can achieve whatever they want within their life framework. As someone who is chronically physically and mentally ill, a person of colour, and neurodivergent, I am always clear about my limitations, struggles, and the systems and tools I used to help support me in the areas I needed it. Being honest about your own limitations as well as your own achievements allows your mentee to see themselves in you, not just see a long list of accomplishments without any sort of context to the challenges and difficulties faced while getting there.
