La interacción con el diccionario de datos es a través de consultas SQL Además tenemos la tarea de optimizar los SQL. Hay que conocer los objetos para dar permisos en los mismos. - Administración de la Base de Datos Oracle, arquitectura, administración de espacio, ajustes, seguridad, movimiento de datos, instalación de parches, instalacion y actualización,etc.

Balance technical and non-technical skills is one of the important topic I have noticed as per my experience the non-technical skills of a DBA would be great communication skills as per my experience I have seen that good communication is a must for conveying your message to the end user and the management that are most likely to be non-technical skill. whereas technical skills depend on which database the individual has experience like Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB but the most common skills are SQL, plsql, performance tuning, backup and recovery, upgrades, and troubleshooting the bug as per latest patches. Importance of self-upgrade learning new technologies especially cloud in this era of computing and AI.

The definition is good, I would just add 2 topics: 1. OS advance knowledge is also a good asset as DB’s are running very closely to the OS, you will always have to deal with advanced OS configuration and have relevant discussions with the sysadmin (you may act as his first backup on some scenarios). 2. Developing shell scripts is also important hence, you need to feel comfortable when reading or developing some basic-intermediate scripts to get specific information according to the support needs. I would also adjust another: 1. The part of “they should be able to create a normalized, scalable, and secure structure for data storage and retrieval.” Is not that common as this part is mainly made by the app architect, not the DBA.

Answering queries, collaboration with team members and demanding resources to perform daily tasks is crucial. Non technical skills especially communication and presentation skills are very important for any technical responsibility not only a DBA.

Having technical skills will always be critical. But, how you articulate your ideas, practices, and principles is also critical. If you want to be the type of leader people follow, you have to know your audience. And, appreciate the wide dichotomy of experiences and education. Remember, it’s not their job to understand you. It’s your job to make sure you made the points clear to the right folks.

Developing those interpersonal relationships with internal or external customers is important. I feel it gives them the feeling they mean so mething to you and can call upon that relationship when there is a crisis or a need.

La mayor parte del tiempo el DBA debe resolver incidentes. - Comunicación, debe ser capaz de interactuar con otros sectores: usuarios, desarrolladores, administradores de Sistema Operativo, de Storage, Seguridad, Auditoria - Trabajo en Equipo, en la mayoría de las instalaciones y consultoras los DBA son varios y deben compartir la información y tareas realizadas y coordinar acciones en conjunto.

The practice part is essential, the time you have dedicated to do it before is the key, but this does not depend on years of experience but the practice you may have. I would seriously suggest to build your own DB lab and try multiple scenarios like recovering to a PIT, install and uninstall, dropping services and get them back, analyzing advanced db functionalities, etc. Reading books, taking courses or watching videos is fine, but you need hands on practice.

I would add an important topic, which is the ability to recognize your errors. Does not matter how expert or experienced you are, you are human and humans make mistakes. Most of the time the main problem is not the mistake, but how you handle it and fix it. Does not matter if you have done it 100 times before, double checking critical activities (like the where statements you will use on a delete) and basic steps (like validating that you are not doing a change directly in production) is essential.
