External hard disks can be an easy and very useful/ mobile way to store photographs, etc. They are however open to the risk of being damaged. They are also potentially open to a risk of being stolen. Particularly if you are travelling. The increasing capacity of external hard disks means that they can hold a lot of photographs.

So, for example, if the photographs are being taken/ need to be accessed whilst travelling, cloud storage may be your best option. Though limitations with respect to internet access may need to be considered. Cloud storage may, however, be a useful storage solution. That can be used in support of any other storage solution(s) you adopt.

Keeping copies of photographs for potential future use/ reference may be critical for certain technical authors. Though, it is important to remember copyright and intellectual property legislation may apply to the photographs. So, if the photographs are part of an organisations project, are of organisation activities, etc., they will need to be stored on the organisation backup service. If the photographs are not governed by an organisations, etc., copyright and/ or other legislation, then the backup storage used should meet your requirements. This may mean using different types of storage, e.g. for long term and/ or quick access storage. So, the storage medium(s) used may be governed by frequency of access requirements, for example.
