I'm not sure I agree entirely. Of course, you have different video editing styles that each serve their purpose. But nowadays, we are so saturated with all types of media, that you always have to think outside the box to really create an impact. Effects as transitions work, but they won't fix what isn't working. If you want to make the connection between two shots that don't really connect, a cross-fade won't do the job, it'll look artificial.

Effects don't make a video good, what does is good storytelling and building up characters, conflicts, resolutions and pay-offs.

Effects can really enhance a video, but they won't make a video good. I like to use an analogy that's really common with scripts. When you edit, it's like you're building a house based on the blueprint (or in some cases, creating the blueprint from scratch). When that's finished, you start decorating and adding more stuff, but if the blueprint isn't right, the whole thing will fall apart, no matter how much flare you put into it. Without knowing the specific message, there is no viable suggestion. The number of editing variations is infinite without a direction. So maybe there is some advice. Don’t even start to think about execution without a locked concept or a communication brief. Even if you have to create it for yourself. Whatever result you will get, you will never find out if you did something good or bad. And the worst is you cannot learn and improve properly regarding the mentioned areas of video editing. Never start with execution. Whatever you do in life, the right order is always Strategy>Tactics>Execution
