Barcelona is a wonderful example of innovative, family-friendly urban design in practice. Here, planners understood the risk automobiles posed to residents and established "superblocks," three-by-three block grids within high density residential neighborhoods that are reserved for human-scale use. While some vehicles are still allowed to enter these zones, they are limited to speeds of 5-10 miles per hour and required to yield to pedestrians. Within these superblocks, Barcelona has seen a rise in cafes, markets, and park spaces for residents to enjoy. Since implementing this urban design principle, the city has seen an increase in overall quality of life, as well as a number of positive environmental effects.

An ideal family-friendly environment would be such that a 12-year-old or a 75-year-old can walk to the neighbourhood park alone without assistance. This can be accomplished by urban design that places pedestrian safety and security at the top of its list of objectives. Pedestrians and cyclists must be prioritised over cars. Walking and cycling networks must be well defined. Street signage and wayfinding should be comprehensive to children. Adequate street furniture such as resting areas for the elderly should be provided at appropriate locations. Push buttons for stopping traffic should be placed at a child’s reach. Ample street lighting must be installed for dark hours. Vigilance by officials should be conducted at potentially risky spots.

Definitely, safety and security needs to be considered on the priority level while designing any urban spaces. There has to be detectors, the magnet frames (which is a recent and novel innovation for the knives), etc. I also believe there has to an ambulance parked at the site including parks. However, we should also be responsible as we are the citizens and we should also have an helping hand by behaving like a civilian at public spaces.

It's virtually impossible to have a truly family-friendly urban space next to a high-speed roadway, parking lot, or even an active driveway. Due to the constant danger that vehicles present to children, it's essential that family-friendly urban design is human-centered rather than car-centered.
