1 RCM process

The way the question was raised leads to a misconception that is very common, even among qualified professionals. RCM is a methodology to optimize maintenance strategies. RCM is one of several tools to give support to Reliability Engineering. FMEA as RCM is also a qualitative methods to improve reliability. There is a little difference. FMEA identify failure modes and prioritize them. RCM propose actions to prevent the failures modes or let the equipment run to failure. RCA, LDA, RGA, RBD, ALT and others are Reliability Engineering tools.

RCM software is a powerful tool that can streamline the RCM process. It can collect and organize data from assets and systems, perform FMEA and FMECA, calculate the RPN and criticality matrix for each failure mode, generate and compare the maintenance task options, create and optimize the RCM plan and schedule, as well as track and report performance and reliability indicators. The RCM team is a group of people involved in RCM analysis and decision making. 4 RCM logic tree

The RCM logic tree is a method to help you select the best maintenance task for each failure mode through a series of questions. These questions include: Is the failure evident or hidden? Does it have safety or environmental consequences? Operational or non-operational consequences? Can it be prevented by a scheduled task? Predicted by a condition monitoring task? Reduced by a redesign or modification? Depending on the answers, the RCM logic tree will suggest one of the following maintenance tasks: scheduled restoration or replacement, scheduled discard or overhaul, on-condition task, failure finding task, no scheduled maintenance, or design out maintenance. This can simplify and standardize the decision making process and ensure that the maintenance tasks are effective and efficient.

Para llevar adelante en forma exitosa un proyecto de RCM debe existir previamente un proceso bien estructurado de Gestión de Mantenimiento, ya que esta estrategia se ubica en el tope de una pirámide imaginaria, cuyos niveles inferiores están conformados desde el piso hacia la punta por el mantenimiento reactivo, luego mantenimiento preventivo, en la siguiente instancia CBM, seguido de Mantenimiento Predictivo hasta llegar a RCM en el extremo superior de la estructura. Estas estrategias proactivas que se mencionaron son las que permitirán luego construir un proyecto de RCM apuntado específicamente a equipos críticos que tenga una gran probabilidad de ser exitoso y contribuir de ese modo al aumento de la disponibilidad de las instalaciones.
