2 Understand the feature control frame

The feature control frame is a rectangular box that contains the GD&T symbol, the tolerance value, the datum references, and the modifiers. The feature control frame is attached to a dimension or a leader line that points to the feature. The feature control frame tells you what kind of geometric characteristic is controlled, how much variation is allowed, how it is related to other features or datums, and how it is measured. To interpret the feature control frame, you need to read it from left to right and from top to bottom.

I would suggest you learn the basic symbols and meanings first, once you have a good grasp of these begin to understand the next layer. The Industry you work in will focus more around certain GD&T symbols, companies within a similar/the same industry tend to use similar/the same symbols so make sure you know these and their meanings. Most importantly don't be afraid to ask and use reference material.

3 Apply the rule of thumb

GD&T symbols itself will tell you what and how the tolerance zone maintained when you applied in particular feature. The tolerance are the maximum and minimum limits of the dimension that it can vary.

Many fabrication shops, and especially those in China, do not understand GD&T callouts. In my many years of experience, they simply ignore them.
