Before embarking on the digital transformation journey, it is imperative that the existing list of assets along with the associated list of vulnerabilities and dependencies be identified and noted. It is pertinent that the organisational vision, policy, procedures, standards, baseline and controls must be clearly identified and documented. Apart from noting the gaps in the existing setup, it is also important to conduct a threat modelling of threats that may be attributable to the digital transformation. While it should be the objective to be abreast with the adoption of the latest technological & digital transformation, it is equally important to keep the associated risks within the organisational risk appetite.

Implementing a Security framework is mandatory for continued business. The framework provides a checkoff list for the mandatory controls for minimising risk. The security framework also highlights the best practices for secure business operations. The broad classification of the frameworks are Control Frameworks, Program Frameworks and Risk Frameworks. Some of the known security frameworks are NIST-RMF, CIS, ISO 27001/ 27002, HIPAA, COBIT, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) FISMA (Federal Information Systems Management Act) HITRUST CSF (Health Information Trust Alliance) PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards) COSO (Committee of Sponsoring Organisations) DPDP (Digital Privacy Data Protection).

3 Adopt a zero-trust model

The Zero-trust model, a relatively new transformation requires every user request to be verified and validated prior authorisation. It works on the principle of never trust but always verify. To adopt and implement the zero trust model, it is important to understand the following :- 1. Know insiders and their workflow. 2. Understand and control your data and privilege access. 3. Control lateral movement and application access. 4. Limit access based on risk. 5. Monitor data use and user activity. 6. Automate processes, policies, and data classification and its life cycle management. Post clearly identifying the above, the Zero Trust concept can be implement for Identity, Endpoint, Network, Applications, Data and Infrastructure.

This means that you apply security best practices throughout the phases of planning, designing, coding, testing, deploying, and maintaining your software. Security concepts needs to be incorporated into the following phases :- 1. Planning - Time and cost requirements for designing a secure system should be catered. 2. Design - The system design should include checks to prevent proliferation of data even to users with privileged access. 3. Development - Refer development and coding practices like OWASP, NIST-SSDF, SEI CERT etc. 4. Testing & Deployment - The developed system should be thoroughly tested viz. SAST, DAST, OWASP top 10 etc. A third party audit is recommended prior deployment. 5. Life cycle maintenance - Post deployment, proper change management should be accounted with threat modeling and risk management activities being conducted prior bringing new changes in the system.

Therefore, you need to educate and empower your employees to become security champions.
