What are the best strategies for producing virtual and augmented reality videos?

During our careers, we will inevitably encounter difficulties and challenges, with one of the significant hurdles for both junior and veteran producers being the introduction of new technologies, such as AR and VR. While these technologies are relatively new, one effective approach to overcoming this challenge is conducting thorough research, often referred to as the state of the art. In simpler terms, it means examining what other producers have created. My mindset is always focused on how I can enhance existing ideas or draw inspiration from ongoing projects. This serves as a valuable starting point to identify a niche and understand the innovative work being done by our colleagues.

While you consider the format of your video, such as 360-degree, 180-degree, or 3D, put yourself in the shoes of the viewer. Would you like to turn your head all the way round to look what's behind you constantly or would you prefer to only casually glance maybe 90 degrees from dead centre max? In most cases you'll find out you're probably shooting for people that will only consume 180-degrees rather than the full 360. I'm not saying that means that you should only shoot 180 degrees though. Even if your audience only watches 180 degrees it may not be such a bad idea to capture the full sphere just as we shoot in 6-8K for a 4K end result. But it makes your life easier to just focus your direction on the 180 degrees that are right in front.

The storytelling is vital in the development of any audiovisual product, look at referents, try to mix them, and create something... weird... but those weird ideas are more appreciated rather than the same old..shhh... sorry. It is vital to look at the target audience when you are planning an interaction, it is different from the interaction from a GenZ in comparison to one Millenial. Could you keep an eye on the target?

Tools, tools tools... the neverending story of a virtual producer, during the last year, was released maybe a thousand tools to create , modify or make simple life of a producer... but tellme old fashioned guy.. but the most important tool is your ideas, and well if you don't know how to use one new fancy tool, go to youtube and learn from the YouTubers (they need to eat as well)... but think about what platform will be that AR or VR...

The edition part is my favorite part, is the place where you can use your referents with total freedom ( unless you are working for a company, you must follow the creative brief please!) Adobe suit is the most versatile and compelling programs for your edition, take your time to learn how to use it and when you feel in your comfort zone... go deeper... always have something new to learn.

The weigh is the key, we dont talk about body, we tal about the weight of your source archive, which must be deliverable in any smartphone ( think in persons that don't have a the last Apple release, or the best killer machine of the stores) think in your aunts and grandparents that wanna use or saw your AR VR

Although VR and AR are popular these days it might be worth exploring if it will actually bring any additional value at all and if it does, if it weighs up to the hassle of producing it instead of producing in the traditional format. You may for example just find out that although a VR video may be more unique, your client might actually benefit just as much or more from a traditional video that is usually easier and cheaper to produce to boot.
