I like a PLC design that allows an open approach to new schemes. For example, using a PLC with Codeesys allowed me to create an experimental function block using a novel filtering process from research associated with adaptive controls. I used the block to control a solid-state relay powering a combination heater element and thermocouple (I had other conditional elements like a cooling system to force heating, etc.). I used a few variations of DOEs. Still, the point is that it is impossible to wait for manufacturers to innovate when the designer and programmer can and should maximize their own process, IMHO.
