In my experience, reflecting on past assignments that I have carried out and the feedback that was given by the clients is helpful to determining areas of strength and those which need improvement. The clients' feedback, especially where it relates to several assignments, in many cases helps to provide an objective perspective on strengths and weaknesses. For example, prior to founding our firm, I have facilitated several training sessions both when employed and on pro bono consultancy basis where the clients had given very positive reviews on my participatory approach and out-of-the-box thinking sessions which have continued to be aspects of our unique approach in strategy and organizational capacity development processes.

One thing that has helped me in work and life since I was very young is my focus on being very self-aware. I knew where I excelled and where I would barely meet the minimum expectations. While the start-up needs to be financially sustainable, there are many other considerations to make in deciding the market even prior to analyzing it. For example, because of the prevalent corruption in the public sector, I decided that as a start-up, I was not going to focus on it. Since public procurement lays out the criteria for winning business rather explicitly (even though in my context, the criteria is rarely followed), I decided I would concentrate on growing the experience aspect of our start-up in the private and non-profits sectors

Setting goals is pivotal. One needs to determine where they are at, where they want to go, how to get there and how they will know they have gotten there. I find developing annual business plans as well as 3-5 years strategic frameworks very useful as my way of setting goals. The annual business plans help me to discuss, monitor and review goals with my small team on an ongoing basis be they are long-term, short-term, and/or associates. The business plans also give me an opportunity to discuss the values that underpin our business so that it is clear that while we want to achieve whatever financial and operational numbers, what we cannot compromise on is abundantly clear. Assuming your start is fundable is what will get you funded. Tl;dr: You’re going to hear no continually from investors. If you expect to hear a no, you can focus on how to improve rather than managing your emotions from being rejected. If you’re fundable, you just need to keep practising and hitting up investors till you get a yes. In my time at a Silicon Valley startup as Managing Director for EMEA, every 8 months, we would start preparing for our next round. My Job was to get a European investor. In our C round, I spent four months pitching over 50 leads. Finally, we got the largest cleantech fund to invest in our C round. So, every no gets you closer to a yes.
