If lack of bias is the objective, there's nothing better than peer reviews from other companies - preferably in a similar sector or at least, with similar processes and pain points. Although some HR people may feel this is difficult to do (and it does take more time that a quick online sweep), its still relatively easy to connect with the relevant people. Industry badges can be gamed and industry awards can be "bought".

A demo account is a really great tool as it does allow you do try it, most often for free. The trick to watch out for is time-limted trail or demo, 14 days is not nearly enough time to get to grips with a system.
