Technical education, whether formal, on the job or in magazines and from conferences is essential. But don't ignore soft skills. Time management skills give you time to do more with less stress. Decision-making skills help you make better decisions, leading to less firefighting and rework. Presentation and influencing skills make you more effective at fitting in the company and getting the resources - or the freedom - to get the work needed done. In a fast moving world, you don't have the time to make everyone as technically expert as you are. You, therefore, need the time and ability to support and persuade to get more done. Technical skills will let you be efficient, but only soft skills will make you effective. Don't leave it to chance.
