There is always some kind of funding available - both internally and externally. You have to research it or ask around. As a graduate student, I reached out to my department, another department, student groups, and university units (library, office of research, etc.). I received funding from all these sources. I also reached out to some local/regional groups and societies related to different disciplines. Some work, some don't - but do not hesitate to reach out or ask!

Always looks at what a funding call is asking for, it won’t always match with the friends you have or networks you know. It’s best to focus on what the call for funding asks for and build a proposal based on that. Including friends and colleagues you like to work with should never be a starting point.
