In my experience, flipped classrooms RULE. They provide and foster independence amongst all learners. I love being able to tell who has completed an assignment based on their ability to engage in deep, meaningful conversations about the content.

My experience for doing flipped classroom activities, has been: mini webquests and webquests in general. Both requiere preparation time, but when you meet with students again with instructor, everything revolves around the idea of having presentations (digital quests final product), debates, etc.

Adding to that, once we evalute the teaching style of the student we can then put them together accordingly, encouraging collaboartion and importance of collective work.

We can also consider making subgroups within the class to encourage shy students as not all people are extrovert so mimimising the strength would make them feel within there coocon and they can foster much rapidly, then gradully we can merge these smaller groups to wider class.
