An important consideration regarding outliers is that they are not necessarily problematic and can cause loss of critical information. Consider a dataset containing the measured weights of 10 Kg oil canisters arriving at a port. However, in 1 out of every 1000 data points, the recorded weight is below 1 kilogram. One might perceive these instances as outliers, possibly attributed to data anomalies, and removing them. But this could be an indicative of theft taking place during transportation. The typical scenario for removing outliers is during predictive modelling. In such situations, the primary objective is to capture the general trends within the data and outliers can significantly reduce the predictive power.
