Usually HLS comes with playlist.m3u8 file which contains supported resolutions and chunks locations: Here is an example of HLS m3u8 file: #EXTM3U #EXT-X-VERSION:3 #EXT-X-STREAM-INF:BANDWIDTH=2500000,RESOLUTION=1280x720 720p/720p.m3u8 #EXT-X-STREAM-INF:BANDWIDTH=5000000,RESOLUTION=1920x1080 1080p/1080p.m3u8 All chunks related to the 720p streaming resolution were stored in 720p/720p.m3u8, and those for 1080p can be found in 1080p. When the user's bandwidth is less than 5 Mbps, the client player will use 720p, and when the bandwidth quality is higher than 5 Mbps, the player is allowed to fetch and play 1080p chunks. That's how adaptive bitrate is implemented over the html5 streaming.
