There are two different ways to think about/use NLP: 1) how human's learn and use language, and 2) how machines learn and use language. Computational linguistics (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computational_linguistics got started as a way to use computers as a tool to help understand human's usage and spun off practical inventions like translation systems and grammar checkers. Folks studying neuroscience came up with models of how brains work, and fed that back into computational linguistics and lo and behold we get large language models. But are these how people learn and use language? No, but jets don't fly like birds either ;-)

When learning, teaching or using NLP, it is very important to teach ethical uses. If you are using these techniques to manipulate or control someone else's behavior in any way, that's unethical. NLP is a tremendously powerful tool for self-knowledge and change. You must be honest and only use these tools with the subjects full knowledge and permission.

In teaching or learning NLP, it's crucial to speak clearly and use consistent language. Following coding and documentation guidelines helps keep things organized and understandable. Workflows should be reproducible and scalable, making it easier to apply techniques to different tasks. At least for a graduate level NLP course I suggest teaching NLP as a Computational Linguistics course where you allow students to do some digging into various aspects of the field, some of which are not very popular now. While NLP is now dominated by empirical and quantitative (statistical and machine learning) methods, in my opinion students should have some exposure to linguistics, psycholinguistics, formal ontology, the philosophy of language, logical semantics and some cognitive linguistics (and cognitive science issues related to language). Students should have the foundations necessary to be able to pivot if (when?) the dominant paradigm in NLP research does change in more linguistic, ontological, semantic and cognitive directions.

For me, the best way to learn NLP is by building projects. One of my first side projects was CV/Job Matching back in 2016, where I used TF-IDF and LDA for topic modeling. I also experimented with early neural language models like Word2Vec, which helped me grasp word embeddings. After BERT’s release, I transitioned to training and fine-tuning Transformer-based models, with one of my first projects being a country-specific NER model. Along the way, I supplemented my learning by reading NLP books, blogs, and watching video tutorials. Combining hands-on experimentation with continuous learning from these resources has been the most effective way for me to master NLP.
