To make sure your alerts work well, regularly check how often they trigger and how fast you respond. Use feedback and data to tweak them. For example, if you get too many false alarms, adjust the settings to avoid unnecessary alerts.

Before your on-call shift, take some time to review past alerts. I do this considering a time period of the last 2 weeks. Note down and categorize alerts, identify the ones that are repetitive and fixable, spend some time on fixing them. This greatly relaxes your on-call shift, and if done by every member of your team, can prove to be immensely helpful.

It can even be managed via Terraform, making it a dream for DevOps teams. Among non-open-source solutions, DataDog and DynaTrace are top-tier choices. They excel in providing comprehensive alerting, monitoring, and automation features, ensuring that alerting processes are streamlined and efficient, reducing manual work and human error.

Sometimes introducing unnecessary approval cycles and waiting for approvals indefinitely will demotivate the team.

For continuous monitoring, it is good to engage different teams spread across 3 different shifts. Each team can pass on the status of the alerts at the end of the shift and any alerts that are currently under investigation can be passed on with appropriate info. The next team can take over from that point and continue the investigation. Another good practice is to consolidate the info and publish it to a commonplace. In due course, this creates a wealth of info and can be treated as "Alert Wikipedia" for future reference of operations engineers.

Everything else that is stated here is good and should be standardized practice. But I just want to add something that is more of a luxury, I guess you can say. I would say if your team, budget allows for it. You can balance monitoring and being paged/notified of incidents by notifying different shifts. And don't just have one team in 1/2 time zones handle every single notification or alert. Have 3 teams each handle the 3 different shifts. Morning, swing, and grave. But it will have to be morning for each shift, basically different time zones. Your default time zone could be the morning shift and then have people from other time zones that match your swing and grave receive alerts and notifications when your off.
