What exactly they're looking for from the consultants, technically andnon technically. Defining the required and desired skills, educational qualifications or certifications if necessary can be a "cherry on top". Also assessing and evaluating the portfolios is a must. How exactly their portfolios are portraying the projects they have been completed. These could be a few areas to look into while we hire designers.

You should also prepare and follow a structured and consistent interview guide, and take notes and ratings for each candidate.
After I have spoken to the candidate (I use the same form and questions for all candidates of a role). I tell the candidate next steps even if that means saying its not a fit in my screen. Once I pass them to the hiring team (remember process was established in the intake) I like a call with someone to dig into technical skills. If there is a test it should be same for all, so I can explain it to candidate. After that either the Hiring manager or an onsite (with no more than 5 people) depending on who did the technical. At that point we need to say yes or no and let the candidate know. Through it all its very important to be the guide for the candidate & answer their questions and let them know its as much about what they want as your team.

This should be the easiest part (OK not really). It started with the intake and making sure comp is in alignment with role, skills and industry. From there as you are talking to candidates you need to be talking & verifying comp at each stage. I ask in the beginning and at least once or twice during the process. Scope can in the mind of the candidate change. They could be looking at other offers so you should be asking what's going on at ALL stages. It's all about the relationship you established on the first call! Get to know them and what is important. If you know all that the offer becomes much easier. When I have had declines most have been when I missed a step. No FEAR, be willing to ask tough questions and be ready to hear the answer.

Hiring designers isn't about fancy degrees or who can sketch a swan blindfolded. It's about three things: taste, grit, and empathy. Taste isn't taught, it's inherent. Look for a portfolio that screams originality and an eye for aesthetics. Grit? Design is 99% perspiration. Find someone who iterates like it's a religion. Empathy, the killer app in design. They must obsess over user experience, living in the customer's shoes. Bottom line, forget the resume theatrics. Focus on their work, tenacity, and ability to see through the customer's lens.
