1 Choose a reliable cloud provider

One of the first steps to protect your cloud infrastructure from DDoS attacks is to choose a reliable cloud provider that offers robust security features and guarantees. You should look for a cloud provider that has a proven track record of mitigating DDoS attacks, provides adequate bandwidth and resources to handle traffic spikes, and offers transparent and timely communication in case of an incident. You should also review the service level agreements (SLAs) and the terms and conditions of the cloud provider to understand their responsibilities and liabilities in case of a DDoS attack.

Recently there are many cloud providers who offer DDoS attack protection for cloud infrastructure. Most of the vendors use traffic scrubbing and blackholing to protect against attacks. AWS Shield, Azure DDoS protection, GCP Cloud DDoS defense and Akamai DDoS protection are few examples of vendor specific solutions against DDoS.

Another best practice for protecting your cloud infrastructure from DDoS attacks is to implement cloud-native security tools that are designed to work seamlessly with your cloud environment. Examples; AWS WAF, Azure WAF, Palo Alto Networks Prisma Cloud, MacAfee Cloud Native Security Platform, AWS Elastic Load Balancing, Azure Application Gateway, Google Cloud Load Balancing, etc.

A defense-in-depth strategy is a security approach that involves applying multiple layers of protection to your cloud infrastructure to reduce the risk and impact of a DDoS attack. A defense-in-depth strategy can help you prevent, detect, and mitigate DDoS attacks at different levels, such as the network, the application, and the data. The best example is 'Perimeter Security' of Defense-in-Depth for Cloud DDoS Protection. Both DDoS protections and cloud WAF are 'perimeter security'. Examples of DDoS protections are AWS Shield, Azure DDoS protection, GCP Cloud DDoS defense and examples of WAF are AWS WAF, Azure WAF.

4 Update and patch your cloud systems

Keeping your cloud systems updated and patched is a simple but effective way to protect your cloud infrastructure from DDoS attacks. Outdated and unpatched systems can have vulnerabilities and flaws that can be exploited by attackers to launch or amplify DDoS attacks. Therefore, you should regularly update and patch your cloud operating systems, applications, libraries, and dependencies to fix any security issues and improve your performance and stability. You should also use automation tools and scripts to streamline and simplify the update and patching process.

Patching latest updates, upgrading software versions and firmwares must be done promptly and proactively. This will fix bugs in the security solutions and improve performance so attackers do not exploit these security gaps and vulnerabilities. Updating regulary will add new indentity features and latest attack signatures. Regular patching must be scheduled as per business requirements.

5 Educate and train your staff

Finally, one of the best practices for protecting your cloud infrastructure from DDoS attacks is to educate and train your staff on the basics of cloud security and DDoS prevention. Your staff should be aware of the common types and sources of DDoS attacks, the potential consequences and costs of a DDoS attack, and the best practices and policies for preventing and responding to a DDoS attack. You should also conduct regular security awareness campaigns, simulations, and drills to test your staff's knowledge and skills and to improve your readiness and resilience.

To protect your cloud environment from DDoS attacks you have to implement more than one best practices which include using DDoS protection services from Cloud providers, configuring rate limiting on your web servers and load balancers to restrict the number of requests from individual IP addresses, deploying WAFs to protect against application layer DDoS, utilizing CDNs which can absorb and mitigate DDoS attacks by distributing traffic across their global network of servers and filtering out malicious requests etc.
