1 Basics of turbofan engines

A turbofan engine consists of a fan, a compressor, a combustor, a turbine, and a nozzle. The fan draws in air and splits it into two streams: one that passes through the core of the engine, where it is compressed, mixed with fuel, ignited, and expanded, and one that bypasses the core and provides thrust directly. The ratio of the bypass air to the core air is called the bypass ratio, and it affects the fuel efficiency and noise level of the engine. Generally, higher bypass ratios result in lower fuel consumption and quieter engines.

2 Design choices for fuel efficiency

One of the main design choices that affect the fuel efficiency of a turbofan engine is the pressure ratio, which is the ratio of the pressure at the exit of the compressor to the pressure at the inlet of the fan. Higher pressure ratios increase the thermal efficiency of the engine, which means more of the fuel energy is converted into useful work. Uno de los aspectos que más ha ayudado a la mejora de la eficiencia de los motores en cuanto a consumo de combustible a lo largo del tiempo ha sido el aumento progresivo del By-Pass-Ratio (BPR). Este indicador es la proporcion de flujo de aire "frio" que mueve el gran Fan (ventilador) del motor, respecto al flujo primario o caliente que pasa a través del core del motor. El mover grandes masas de aire a menores velocidades ha conllevado a reducir el consumo de combustible en gran medida.

De hecho en las aerolineas existen departamentos que se centran en este aspecto ya que representa un gran ahorro a nivel compa?ia. 1. Derate de motores: ajuste de la potencia de los motores 2. SOP: Single Operation Procedures. Operar con solo un motor durante movimiento en tierra 3. Navegación RNAV 4. Lavado de motores: los hace más eficientes 5. Ajuste preciso del centrado del peso 6. Reducción de peso (ejemplo: set de asientos más ligeros) 7. Limpieza de fuselaje y alas 8. Reparaciones estructurales "sin parches" (Flush repairs) para reducir resistencia 9. Uso mínimo de APU.
