Along with Mass, Heat is a fundamental issue in space, these two areas alone drive everything else really and usually in getting rid of heat more often than not but redirecting it can be useful as well depending on the spacecraft concept design and mission. With the advent of AM traded at the spacecraft concept design level with all the other notional subsystems there are tremendous opportunities to concurrently design a passive thermal management system. Driven by thermal model predictions directly, but also driven by the other subsystem models ex. power, mass, GNC, comm, SW etc. simultaneously trading, bringing even non conventional geometries to best thermally absorb, emit or conduct heat A/R. All trade equally and considerate of cost.
