1 Rejuvenation methods

Common methods include fog seal, which is a thin layer of diluted asphalt emulsion sprayed over the pavement surface to seal cracks and restore flexibility; scrub seal, consisting of a fog seal followed by a mechanical broom that forces the emulsion into the cracks and voids; chip seal, which is a layer of aggregate chips embedded in a layer of asphalt emulsion or hot asphalt binder to provide a new wearing surface and fill cracks; micro-surfacing, a mixture of polymer-modified asphalt emulsion, aggregate, water, and additives that is applied as a thin overlay to improve skid resistance and fill ruts; hot in-place recycling, a process that heats and softens the existing asphalt layer, adds a rejuvenating agent, and remixes and compacts the material to create a new layer; and cold in-place recycling, which mills and pulverizes the existing asphalt layer, adds a rejuvenating agent and sometimes new aggregate, and places and compacts the material to create a new base layer.

2 Modification methods
