You've got the tech-savvy millennials, the Gen Xers who've seen it all, and the baby boomers who've actually done it all. It's like a sitcom with a lot of potential for both comedy and learning. I often start team meetings with a light-hearted joke about these generational stereotypes to ease any tension and foster understanding.

Emphasizing a culture of open communication and mutual respect lays a solid foundation. It’s no longer about how the communicator wants to deliver the intended message but how the communicatee is most likely to consume the message.

Lean into the generational intelligence structures that exist on a team. Research shows that when people are younger than 40 years old, they have what's called "fluid intelligence" (FI). Those over 40 have "crystallized intelligence" (CI). Both are strengths to a team. FI = strong working memory, innovative capacity, and focus. CI = strong pattern recognition, judgment, and wisdom. FI = people feel like they can solve any problem. CI = people know which problem to solve. FI = start-up entrepreneur (problem solve, innovate, hustle) CI = start-up investor (spotting trends, talent, opportunity) FI = work hard, learn, and grow. CI = coach, encourage, and inspire. Your intelligence structure is a unique strength you can offer to a team.

Many businesses evolve over time and as they scale the generation gap can become stressful on the organization. Legacy employees often have vast experience in several roles and capacities within the organization while newcomers bring very specific skills in narrow focuses that are necessary for growth. What is essential here is that you bridge the two seamlessly and without sacrificing the vision. Promoting or placing legacy employees in leadership roles or roles of influence will help to distribute information to new employees. This establishes respect for legacy members of the team and provides training for newer employees.

Buddy up and find common ground by asking questions. Be curious. We all bring the one thing the team is looking for in creative problem solving and building relationships. There is one thing that works every time and that is spending the day in the life of the other person. Sit with them at their workplace, shadow them in meetings, observe them as they navigate the routine and unexpected activities. Then swap. A proven formula for effective cross-generational feedback is: High Standards (I have high expectations for you.) + Assurance (I know you can meet them.) + Direction (So try this specific thing.) + Support (If you stumble, I’ll help you recover.)

Our team gatherings often feature a 'Story Time' segment where team members share experiences from their generational perspective, always leading to laughter and learning. While there is of course a general tendency it is not necessarily true all the time. What that means for you as a leader: - do not assume - get to know you team members′ individual views, preferences and strengths - ensure the team members get to share these among each other

It's not about changing for a generation. It's about changing in light of the evolving landscape of work. Understanding the evolving differences across generations gives us insight into how work is evolving and therefore gives us insight into how we might change our communication, leadership or working styles (not for a certain generation) but to thrive in the ever-evolving future of work.
