The goal depends on personal interests in nature. Nature is moving without any stop. If people are not interested in movement of nature, forget to work as research scientists. There are many phenomena those we cannot explain quantitatively. I suggest parents to watch their kids who stop to walk to find something interest. This is the beginning.

"Clinical" or drug-effectiveness R&D might be very different from a purer "technology" R&D. I feel that a lot of integrity stems from the personal ethics of the people involved, and their confidence to withstand or push back influencers from elsewhere. It is important that everyone involved in the R&D are genuinely open-minded to see the data/results objectively, and to potentially "learn" from them. If people at the top are too keen to see results which support a particular outcome then conscious and unconscious biases and incentives are more likely to skew things. In any kind of R&D, meticulous records of test conditions, observations etc. are invaluable, especially when investigating anomalies - and help keep everyone honest.

I think it's helpful to really think about your "self-honesty". Are you honest with with yourself? Think carefully about what you really know, what you don't know, the limits of your knowledge or expertise, and what you'd *like* to be true (but maybe isn't). Reflect on the degree of confidence or certainty you have in things you believe. Is that justified? Learn to be comfortable with the fact that there are many things you don't (and even can't) know with 100% certainty. If you find you, or "the industry" has beliefs without much evidence... go test them. It's self-learning, and might even produce a new crucial insight.
