I think everyone has heard the SMART acronym before. This isn't anything new. What I believe is most important to know about the SMART framework is that it really sets the stage for the outcomes you are looking for. You've GOT to understand what you're aiming for and that it is the right target. If you don't then all of your busy activities may not get you there (or worse, you'll find you're building a ladder that is leaning again the wrong wall). So, it is ok if you want to roll your eyes at the acronym like I do, but when you understand the principle behind it and why it is so important you can make it work well for you.

How will you measure the change and what indicators will you use? Is the change realistic and attainable within your resources and timeframe? How does the change align with your mission, vision, and objectives? When will you achieve the change and how long will it last? For example, a SMART outcome for a youth mentoring program could be that by the end of the program, 80% of the mentees will report increased self-confidence and academic motivation, as measured by a pre-post survey; 90% of the mentors will report improved leadership and communication skills, as measured by a self-assessment tool; and within six months after the program, 70% of the mentees will enroll in college or vocational training, as verified by school records.

3 How to align SMART outcomes with your logic model?

Your SMART outcomes should reflect the logic of your logic model, which shows how your inputs and activities lead to your outputs and outcomes. To ensure that your SMART outcomes are consistent with your theory of change and support your long-term goal, you should review your logic model and identify the key outcomes that you want to measure and evaluate. Then, write SMART outcomes for each key outcome, using the five questions as a guide. Afterward, check if your SMART outcomes match your logic model outputs and outcomes, and if they are logically linked to your inputs and activities. If not, revise your SMART outcomes or your logic model as needed, until they are aligned and coherent.

4 How to use SMART outcomes for evaluation?

Your SMART outcomes are the foundation for your evaluation plan, which outlines how you will collect, analyze, and report data to assess your project or program performance and impact. This plan should include evaluation questions, methods, indicators, timeline, and budget. For example, an evaluation plan for a youth mentoring program could include questions such as how effective the program is in improving the self-confidence, academic motivation, leadership, and communication skills of the mentees and mentors, and how successful it is in facilitating the transition of the mentees to college or vocational training. The methods could include pre-post surveys for the mentees and mentors, self-assessment tools for the mentors, school records for the mentees, interviews and focus groups with the mentees, mentors, and program staff.
