What are the best practices for conducting EIA in different contexts and sectors?

EIAs are important for many reasons, including their legal and ethical weight, but they are also vital for promoting sustainable development since they help to include social and environmental factors into decision-making. As a result, people from all walks of life are more likely to work together and feel more responsible for the outcome. Environmental impact assessments also improve project planning and design by revealing possibilities and threats early on, which permits preventative actions to lessen their impact and flexible approaches to management. Based on my experience, I think the core of the process is the preliminary studies in the EIA, where you gather information about the existing environmental conditions in the project-affected area. This may include information on air and water quality, soil, flora and fauna, noise levels and socio-economic conditions. The baseline data mainly serves as a reference point for predicting potential impacts.

The standards mean very little. Inaccurate data and biased data is used to to make sure EIAs are approved. I think to fit in a sharp frame EIA process and to conduct it according to the several widely recognized guidelines and standards that are commonly followed internationally cannot fulfil process completely without having best practices. Most EIAs only evaluate the ‘Maximum Technologically Feasible Reduction’. They should also assess ‘lifestyle change’ measures which range across a spectrum from (1) Bans, (2) Charging/costs and (3) Campaigns to build public understanding to (4) Incentives and eventually (5) Adoption (as with seat belt use). Examples include ‘active travel’. Lifestyle measures can be implemented through regulation or fiscal measures. A reason cited for evaluating technology measures ‘only’ is that they help the economy and have no ‘political costs’. A role of campaigners, politicians and others is to make the political costs of inaction greater than action e.g. the phasing out of diesel cars in London.

Due to the level of corruption and political pressures occurring everywhere improving the quality of EIAs would not be an easy task
