Sometimes ad hoc heuristics work well, but if you cannot check them for soundness you cannot be sure they just do not suddenly fail.

In my experience, there are two approaches; the Academic, which tends to focus on finding an optimal solution when answering a question that requires developing a new algorithm from scratch; and the Industry, which focuses more on the practicality of the answer (space, scalability, and complexity). If the question is complex (eg., the known answer is an NP-hard and no Approximation algorithm is known) then the industry will prefer a more “quick” approach that gets “the job done with some level of approximation and acceptable level of accuracy” rather than developing very complex “and more precise” algorithms that may not be practical to implement. Finding the best-of-breed algorithm is the key when such algorithm is being developed.

I have spent a considerable amount of time developing algorithms that convert continuously varying signals into binary digital signals without loss of accuracy. The algorithm is a process but generating the algorithm cannot be mapped to an algorithm. In other words there is not an algorithm to create an algorithm especially when the problem is difficult.

There may be more than one way to solve a problem. Choose the best which can save on time complexity and/or space complexity.

Engineering is always a compromise. Requirements development is key. For instance, I am designing a car. What purpose does the car serve? Whom is the intended buyer? Is there already a car that does this? Car gets 35 MPG, has 4 doors, can carry a certain capacity, etc .... That car is not going to win any races as the Drag Strip, that is not the purpose of the car.
