In my experience, best practice begins by taking an authentic and transparent?approach to deliver on business objectives through genuine stakeholder?engagement with community.?Through identifying key community need, you can then begin to craft a framework/approach to deliver on those needs while meeting business objectives. But CSR isn't just a front-end activity, the relationship between business, community and non-profit partners must be one based on trust and communication at regular intervals. If the door is open and people have the chance to be heard and engaged, it allows for innovation, reduction in risk, and an ability to fine-tune approaches to deliver CSR strategies along the way in real time.

The real partners you need will be less easy to connect with. If you are looking for partners that are really embedded in the community look for public services like schools, health facilities and libraries. Look for initiatives protecting the commons like rivers and nature and look for bottom up initiatives that are doing the hard work around homelessness and poverty.

Communicating will be counterproductive if you do not walk the talk. Rename and reorganise your communications department to become community managers. In reality, most social challenges are multi-faceted. Understanding which component(s) of an issue an organisation is most equipped to contribute to and focusing its energies on that is a great way to deliver CSR initiatives that best meet community needs. Working outside of an organisation's strengths runs the risk of limiting effective impact, reducing employee motivation, spreading teams too thin and coming across as inauthentic or tone-deaf.
