In a remote or blended working environment—you should also consider access & availability of training materials. Do you want your employees to only access them at work? Or only behind the corporate firewall. Youtube is probably the best video based e-learning platform out there—but it’s not a traditional learning platform like Storyline 360. Also—you can’t deliver branched training there. But if your employees have a cell phone, they have full time access.

Learning content can be a 5 minute, micro-learning module—or it can be a 3 hour podcast. People listen to both for entertainment. Think about the power of the “infinite scroll” for how you sequence & structure your content. You don’t want people to scroll just to get to the test or check the compliance box—you want them to scroll with engaged interest. Simple, but not easy. Especially in a world where EVERYTHING else competes your content.

Experience is engagement. You want your learners to become engaged with the material. True—some topics can be dry. Or some topics might see too specific or arcane for the method being forced. But if you can make it engaging for a portion of your target audience, you can scale it. But it depends. Compliance training, for example, probably can’t be more engaging if delivered via an Oculus console. But maybe you can bring in real world events or other negative examples to help learners connect the dots between non-compliance and failure.

Analytics are hard—especially when you consider data analytics in the frame of Kirkpatrick’s Level of Evaluation. Especially if we’re considering Level 1 feedback—starts & completions are a data equivalent to the legacy, likert style “smiley sheet”. You want to match your Level 1 metric to the most complete behavior you want your learners to conduct. Data analytics can also lead to Level 3 & 4 evaluations as well—especially matching prior learner experience to pre-course assessments or letting learners take the opt out path.

You want to find a platform that offers reliable and responsive customer service, technical support, and account management, to help you solve any issues or challenges that you may encounter. We’re looking at the entire ecosystem around the learner. There’s definitely post-course support, but we also need to look at the ecosystem of performance before and after the training. Not just that, training is an isolated solution, unless we can incorporate it into a broader community of practice for learners to progress, share lessons learned, and potentially provide feedback & instructional content on their own. In an adhoc fashion.
