Using mud with low filtration rate to reduce the invasion of mud into the formation is one of the best practices to reduce formation damage, then implementing additives will stabilise clays into the formation to prevent swelling or dispersion, in a nutshell, to change the mud properties (rheological)is crucial in drilling process, so ensure that drilling fluid is compatible with the formation fluid to minimze damage.

In my opinion, find the type of mud that is compatible with the formation you are drilling. Keep a low filtration with a good filter cake and proper viscosity , gel strength, density to minimize formation invasion and improve hole cleaning. Last thing you want is creating a problem with unstable clay and way too much drilling cuts that you can't circulate out of the hole.

The type of well ocmpletion should be one of the main driver for mud/ drill-in fluid design to avoid "over design" on mud.
