What are the best methods for assessing safety training comprehension?

Combination of written tests, practical demonstrations, scenario-based assessments, observations, self-assessment surveys, interactive simulations, discussions, audits, and feedback mechanisms can help assess safety training comprehension effectively. These methods ensure that employees not only grasp the information but also apply it consistently, promoting a safer work environment.

I wish to share my views on this issue based on the recent high impact training session I conducted for a well-known marine support vessels company. Nearly 30 paxs. From their MD, senior managers, crewing mgr. crews and HR staff. What are the best methods? 1) Make it relevant! Simple. If it is about marine vessel activities, make sure the contents are relevant. 2) Be creative! The paxs will get better understanding if the session is creative. 3) Get everybody involved! During group activities, make sure everyone is involved/ 4) Ensure understanding! Let everyone speak. 5) Incorporating real-life examples & case studies. We shall be able to assess the level of comprehension if we can perform the above mentiones activities successfully.

I believe one of the best ways to insure proper training is impressed on trainees is to watch a video on what might happen if safety measures are not in place. Something about seeing disaster makes the viewer remember and possibly avoid making those mistakes in the future.

-In my experience there’s no sure answer as all have validity and limitations. The reason pre and post testing is most common is it allows you the most efficient way of checking but not necessarily the best depending on the job or role of a team member.

I served several years at Food Safety Monitoring Center and working in a lab can be considered as a risky job. Therefor, lab safety training was part of our Self Development Plan. One thing I found useful was the simulation sessions together with after-course follow up discussions. Equally, intra-labs knowledge sharing and transfer proved as good sources to retain knowledge and experience. Whether it is a physical safety as my experience in my lab or any other type, like emotional or physiological, it is crucial to have a convincing narrative about the importance of such training. In my case, safety training was a life saver due to lab's high risks. So if the rationale is clear, knowledge retention is feasible.

I am in agreement with the system of direct training with an observation & otj coaching as well. It gives you a real-time & hands on opportunity to see the effectiveness of your training as well as being able to immediately address any misunderstanding or misconveyed information the instant it's recognized.

I've found that after I have shown someone how to do a safety-related task, it is essential to then have them "teach" a co-worker that same task to show that they have a full understanding of what is required. It also allows me to offer little suggestions to improve both persons' performances and builds confidence in both of themselves. By watching, then doing, and, finally, teaching the skill, a person is better suited and able to do it correctly and consistently.
