I took a turn when I studied calligraphy and then when personal computers made the scene I designed some type faces. Whilst it's not required in the design industry, a degree shows dedication to skill and fills a role that jobs, other designers and pure observation won't. Don't get me wrong, I left my degree early (at the encouragement of my lecturer) - but I still know a handful of concepts purely from this degree in which I fall back on and it has been the difference in quality of work, securing employment or retaining someone's business. After 6 years, it is obvious to me who has studied and who has not - in a world of endless information, self-learning and 'overnight mastery' - it pays to learn FROM others directly and it absolutely speaks through your portfolio and how you conduct yourself, everytime.

To be a designer it doesn't mean you have to have a degree. Sure, it helps a lot to know the basic, the theories and have someone to teach you and talk to directly, but you could also be a designer without a degree. You don't need a degree, IF you are willing to learn on your own.
